April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month!
April 1st through April 30th is the 12th annual Pet First Aid Awareness
Month. Sponsored by PetTech, (www.pettech.net) Pet First Aid Awareness Month emphasizes the importance of being a caring, loving and responsible pet owner and pet care professional through education and training. This year’s theme is “Pets and People Staying Healthy Together” – increasing the quality and quantity of our furry friends’ lives.
Pet First Aid Awareness Month main focus is the importance of learning the necessary skills of CPR and first aid care for our furry friends. Pet first aid is the immediate care administered to an injured or suddenly taken ill animal. It covers immediate care in the home to stabilize your pet and veterinarian care when necessary. Possessing the knowledge, skills and techniques of pet first aid can mean the difference between life and death for your pet; between temporary disability or permanent injury. Pet first aid not only can save your pet, it can save you money in expensive veterinarian bills.
Pet First Aid and CPR training is available to all pet care professionals and pet owners through the American Red Cross, Knoxville Chapter. The class is taught at the Young-Williams Animal Center. To register online for the next class, visit http://www.knoxarc.org.

Pet First Aid – Basic Procedures by American Veterinary Medical Association. http://www.avma.org/firstaid/procedures.asp
Always remember that any first aid administered to your pet should be followed by immediate veterinary care. First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until it receives veterinary treatment.

. . . there is no place like home.
Hire a professional pet sitter!
Professional pet sitting serves as an excellent alternative to boarding. We come to your home so your pets stay in familiar surroundings. Pets are happier and experience less stress remaining at home. Exposure to illness is minimized and travel trauma is eliminated.
We follow your pet care routine as closely as possible. This includes feeding, fresh water, answering nature's call, clean-up of litter boxes, administering needed medication, exercising and playing, transporting your pet to the veterinarian in an emergency, and providing your pets the attention and affection they deserve.
In addition to taking care of your pets, we will conduct home security checks, bring in the mail/newspaper, open/close shades and blinds, turn on/off lights, water plants, take out trash - activities that say someone is at home. No one need know you are away.
We provide daily updates on your pet's activities so you always will know how they are doing.
In-home professional pet care services provide pet owners peace of mind.

Do your halloween festivities include your canine or feline furry friend?
Halloween pet safety tips for you to consider:
1. Keep all candy out of reach of your pets. The artifical ingredients and sweeteners in candies can upset your pet's digestive system. Chocolates are especially toxic.
2. Be careful of using candles to light pumpkins. An excited dog can easily knock them over, resulting in a fire. A curious puppy or kitten can get too close and singe whiskers and fur.
3. When you open your door to trick or treaters, be careful not to let your pets escape. If you don't usually keep your dog or cat's i.d./rabies tags on your pet, it is a very good idea to put them on for halloween. If you furry friend does escape and become lost, proper identification can be his or her ticket safely home.
4. If you have outdoor cats, consider keeping them safe inside your home during halloween. Protect them against possible acts of animal cruelty, especially black and other dark colored cats.
5. If you dress your pet for halloween, choose a costume that doesn't restrict movement, or impedes hearing, seeing or breathing. Make sure there are no dangling pieces that your pet can chew off and swallow or choke on.
Some animals do not like wearing clothing. So if this is your furry friend - don't dress and stress your pet.
